How Often Should You Get an Eye Exam?

For most adults, a comprehensive eye exam is recommended every 2 years, following the guidelines of the Alberta Association of Optometrists:

  • Adults 19–64 without risk factors: every year
  • Adults 19–64 with diabetes, contact lenses, or other eye conditions: annually
  • Seniors 65 and older: annually

Regular eye exams help monitor normal age-related changes, like presbyopia, while detecting conditions that can impact your vision and overall health. Our goal is to help you maintain healthy eyes for life.

What to Expect During Your Eye Exam

Bring your current glasses or contacts, a list of medications, and any questions about your vision. If your exam requires dilation, your optometrist will let you know in advance. A comprehensive eye exam at Cochrane Eyecare includes:

  • Health history & visual acuity: We start by reviewing your overall health, medications, and vision concerns. Then we check visual acuity to see how well you can see at different distances.
  • Refraction: This step determines your exact prescription by assessing common refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
  • Eye function assessment: We evaluate how your eyes work together, including depth perception, peripheral vision, colour vision, and eye muscle function. These tests help identify underlying issues that can cause eye strain or discomfort.
  • Eye health evaluation: Our optometrists examine your eyes visually and with our technology. Pupil dilation may be used to see the retina and optic nerve clearly. Using tools like tonometry, we check eye pressure for early signs of glaucoma and screen for conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, or retinal changes.

The Next Steps After Your Exam

After your exam, your optometrist will go over the results with you and make sure all your questions are answered. If you need a new prescription, we can help you choose frames and lenses or find the right contact lenses for your lifestyle.

We also offer advice and treatments for common concerns, such as dry eye, and can guide you through options, including laser eye surgery, if it’s right for you. Follow-up visits are scheduled as needed to keep your eyes healthy and your vision sharp.
